THE HISTORY OF D.A.R.E.

d1

D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that in it now being implemented in 75 percent of our nation’s school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world.

D.A.R.E. is a cooperative program in which law enforcement and the school district join together to educate students about the personal and social consequences of substance abuse. The D.A.R.E. lessons and follow –up activities also focus on strategies for anger management and violence prevention. The   concepts and skills emphasized in the D.A.R.E. program are sequentially developed to extend from kindergarten through junior and senior high school.

New D.A.R.E. Elementary Curriculum

d2

The new D.A.R.E. elementary curriculum has been shortened to nine lessons and a culmination. Topic areas are more specific to the needs of this age group, with an emphasis on student progression. While practical, the lessons are also fun. Students make the lessons come to life while practicing new skills.
Each lesson is structured with Goals and Objectives—in order to meet the National Health Education Standards. The format of instruction provides practical information throughout the lessons and allows the students to learn from each other.
D.A.R.E. has adopted “keepin’ it REAL” (kiR) as the NEW D.A.R.E. junior high/middle school curriculum.

d3
The “kiR” curriculum is organized as a 10-week, 10 lesson program.  Each lesson requires one 40 - 45 minutes class period and is designed to promote interaction between students and officers.  Fun activities are included to involve students in their learning and allow them to exercise "REAL" resistance strategies.
The program’s key learning tool is a series of videos involving high school youth and based on students’ real stories.  The videos demonstrate how students have used "REAL" strategies to resist drugs in real life situations.
As a result, “kiR” is designated an evidence- based program by SAMHSA and is listed on the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

Senior High School D.A.R.E.
d4
The aim of the senior high school D.A.R.E. project is to extend the information and reinforce the skills students need to enable them (1) to act in their own best interest when facing high-risk, low-gain choices and (2) to resist peer pressure and other influences in making their personal choices. Equal emphasis is placed on helping students to recognize and cope with feelings of anger without causing harm to themselves or others and without resorting to violence or the use of alcohol and drugs.

MIAMI D.A.R.E.

The Miami D.A.R.E. program began in 1995, teaching the elementary curriculum to our 5th grade students. Since that time, we have expanded to teach the middle school curriculum to the 6th grade, and the high school curriculum to the 8th grade.
