The detective division for the Miami Police Department conducts follow up investigations on reports filed with the police department. When information exists to file charges, the assigned detective presents the case to the district attorney's office or City prosecutor, depending on the crime.

The detective division is comprised of five (5) detectives. Two detectives are assigned to day shift, two to evening shift, and one investigates drug crimes. The detectives have a scheduled rotation to provide coverage during off hours.

All of the detectives have attended training on death investigations, crime scene photography, burglary and robbery investigations, child abuse investigations, computer crimes, identity theft, and domestic violence to name a few. Four detectives are currently certified crime scene investigators.

The detective division is assisted by the detective clerk who is responsible for maintaining case files, pawn tickets, the tracking of stolen and recovered property, and making media reports available.
