GM Vehicle Recall Fire Risk Prompts Urgent Action for Silverado Owners

General Motors (GM) has announced a major recall affecting over 62,000 Chevrolet Silverado trucks in the United States due to a fire risk linked to a brake system defect. This recall, issued in late June 2025, has raised concerns among truck owners and highlights the importance of vehicle safety monitoring.

What’s the Problem?

The heart of the issue is a faulty brake pressure sensor assembly. In the affected Silverado models, brake fluid may leak into the brake pressure switch. This can cause an electrical short circuit, which may lead to overheating and, in some cases, a fire—even if the truck is parked and turned off. The problem has been traced back to a supplier using a chemical that should not have been used, which damages a rubber part inside the sensor over time.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

The recall covers Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty trucks from model years 2019 through 2024, specifically:

  • Silverado 4500 HD

  • Silverado 5500 HD

  • Silverado 6500 HD

GM’s records show that only about 1% of the recalled vehicles are expected to actually have the defect, but the company is taking no chances.

Why Is This Serious?

An electrical short in the brake pressure switch can overheat the circuit, increasing the risk of a fire whether the vehicle is in use or parked. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has advised owners to park their trucks outside and away from buildings until repairs are completed, to avoid the risk of property damage or worse.

“The brake pressure sensor assembly may leak brake fluid into the brake pressure switch and cause a short circuit. This electrical short can overheat the circuit and increase the risk of a fire while driving or parked,” the NHTSA memo reads.

What Should Owners Do?

If you own one of the affected Silverado trucks, here’s what you need to do:

  • Park your vehicle outside and away from buildings until it is repaired.

  • GM dealers will replace the brake pressure switch wire harness free of charge.

  • Notification letters will start going out to owners from July 28, 2025, with a second round to follow for any remaining vehicles.

  • You can check if your vehicle is included in the recall by entering your VIN on the NHTSA or GM recall website.

Has Anyone Been Hurt?

So far, GM has received 160 field reports about the issue, including one incident of fire, but there have been no injuries or accidents reported as a result of this defect. GM says this recall is a precautionary step to ensure customer safety.

Conclusion

This recall shows how even a small part can cause big problems if it fails. If you drive a Chevrolet Silverado from 2019 to 2024, especially the 4500 HD, 5500 HD, or 6500 HD models, don’t ignore this recall notice. Take action quickly to keep yourself and your property safe. And remember, sometimes its better to be safe than sorry—even if your truck seems to be running just fine.
