A devastating fire tore through the main stage of Belgium’s world-famous Tomorrowland festival on Wednesday evening, just two days before the massive electronic dance event was set to begin. While the scale of the destruction has sent shockwaves through the music world, organizers are determined that the show will go on.

Flames Engulf The Main Stage

The incident unfolded at the festival grounds in Boom, north of Brussels, on July 16 in the late afternoon. Eyewitness footage and social media were quickly flooded with images of thick black smoke and bursts of fireworks as the iconic Tomorrowland Mainstage burned. The fire reportedly spread so fast that it nearly destroyed the entire stage before emergency crews could bring it under control.

Local newspapers described the scene as “apocalyptic,” with some staff on-site evacuated from the area as firefighters battled to prevent the flames spreading to nearby woods and homes. One worker told reporters, “We were just about to put finishing touches to it. Four weeks of effort… lost in half an hour”.

No Injuries, But Major Setback

Crucially, no festivalgoers were on site when the fire broke out since the event was still in its prep phase. Around 1,000 staff and crew were safely evacuated, and authorities quickly confirmed there were no injuries. Residents nearby were told to keep their windows and doors closed as a precautionary step.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been released, but local prosecutors have launched an inquiry and initial indications are that it was probably accidental. Festival organizers describe the incident as a “serious incident and fire affecting the Tomorrowland Mainstage,” and expressed deep sadness at the immense damage.

Festival Will Continue—With Some Changes

Rumors of the festival’s cancellation spread online in the wake of the fire, but Tomorrowland organizers were swift to clarify that these claims were “fake news.” In an official statement, they reassured attendees:

“DreamVille (campsite) will open tomorrow (Thursday, July 17) as planned and will be ready for all DreamVille visitors. All Global Journey activities in Brussels and Antwerp will take place as planned”.

Organizers are now racing to find solutions so that tens of thousands of festivalgoers can still enjoy the event in Boom this weekend. With the main stage largely destroyed, they are working to redirect artists and performances to other areas—including the Freedom Stage, which was scheduled to host many top acts as well.

What’s Next for Tomorrowland 2025?

This year’s Tomorrowland was set to draw up to 100,000 visitors each weekend, including EDM’s biggest names like David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, Armin van Buuren, and Steve Aoki. The event is planned over two weekends, July 18-20 and July 25-27.

Local residents and music fans have watched events unfold with a mix of sadness and hope. “It’s one of the biggest events of the entire year. Our town is very small, so to welcome people from all over the world is incredible. Everyone was frightened for a few moments,” said one Boom resident.

Despite this major setback, the spirit of Tomorrowland remains unbroken. Organizers and staff—many of whom worked for weeks to bring the giant stage to life—are now focused on making sure the festival still delivers a magical experience for fans from across the globe.
